An existential thriller about loss, trauma, statelessness and historical amnesia, “Transit” is the latest from the German director Christian Petzold, an electrifying, original filmmaker. “Ports are places where stories are told,” a character says in Christian Petzold ’s masterful “Transit,” a film that closes out what the director has called his “Love in the Time of Oppressive Systems Trilogy” with “ Barbara ” and “ Phoenix.” At first, the parallels between “Transit” and “Phoenix” are striking. The ellipsis fits the tone of Transit perfectly—Transit, which kicks off with a bloody suicide the audience never actually sees; Transit, directed by Christian Petzold, in whose films the worst is always beyond the characters’ control because it has happened already. Petzold called the campsites and bars through which they pass “transit spaces.” It was as if Petzold needed to register the pressures of “the ongoing situation” through which his characters moved no less than Seghers needed Transit to fix her readers in wartime Marseille.
Sartre declared that hell is other people; Christian Petzold’s Transit suggests that hell is waiting for other people. An enigma of time and memory, where the past and the present merge like train lines at a terminus, Petzold’s follow up to his masterful Phoenix is another romantic riff on a cinematic classic.

A German, possibly a Jew, is on the run from occupation forces through wartime France in Christian Petzold’s Transit. Is he a hero? This is a difficult question, and one muddied all the more by the German director’s at once bold and simple concept of transposing Anna Seghers’ novel, written and set during the Second World War, to today’s Marseille—all the while retaining the plotting

Unlike most dramas set during World War Two, this one does not feature the familiar backdrop of pastel costumes and dusty streets which usually marks a story firmly in the past. Based on Anna Seghers ’ book set during WWIII, “Transit” obviously evokes Nazi occupation, but Petzold doesn’t use any signifiers to suggest that the film is set in the ’40s.
He purposefully sets a “period film” in modern times to create a liminal temporal space in which past and present effectively collapse. Petzold may not care about any of that, but his version of “Transit” is made to contend with obstacles that Seghers never introduced into the source material, and the film’s main gimmick — more
